潍坊市是举世闻名的世界风筝都.1984年4月1日,潍坊市人民政府根据美国友人大卫.切克列的建议,举办了第一届潍坊国际风筝会,从此,一年一度的潍坊国际风筝会在潍坊举行,至2000年,潍坊已经连续举办了17届.1987年4月,潍坊被推举为世界风筝都.国际风筝联合会还作出决定,将国际风筝联合会的总部设在潍坊.
潍坊国际风筝会的举行,大大提高了潍坊的知名度,打开了潍坊对外开放的大门,使潍坊走向了世界.潍坊市委、市政府采用“风筝牵线、文化搭台、经济唱戏”的方针,把风筝会办成了万商云集的经贸洽谈会,大大促进了潍坊经济的发展,带动了潍坊经济的腾飞.
