Social Accountability 8000 standards are based on international conventions of the International Labor Organization and related international human rights documents, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations convention on the Rights of the Child. The standard also requires compliance with prevailing laws, regulations and other applicable requirements (such as contractual agreements).
SA8000 is a consensus standard specifying minimum requirements in the following areas:
Child Labor: The company must abide by laws governing minimum age, young workers, school attendance, working hours and safe areas of work.
Forced Labor: The company must not engage in or support the use of forced labor or hiring with bribes or deposits required; it must allow employees to leave at the end of a shift and allow employees to quit.
Health and Safety: The company must provide a healthy and safe working environment, prevention of accidents and injury, health and safety training, clean and sanitary support facilities and access to potable water. Freedom of Association and Right to Collective Bargaining. The company respects the right of all personnel to form and join trade unions of their choice and to bargain collectively.
Discrimination. The company must not permit discrimination on basis of race, caste, national origin, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation, union membership or political affiliation.
Disciplinary Practices: Corporal punishment, mental/physical coercion and verbal abuse are not permitted.
Working Hours: The company must be in accordance with applicable laws; employees must not work more than 60 hours per week; overtime must be voluntary; and employees must be given at least one day off in seven.
Compensation: Wages must meet legal/industry minimum and must cover basic needs plus discretionary income; employers must provide benefits, handle deductions and not avoid labor laws through false apprentice schemes.
Management Systems: The company must agree to: create a publicly available policy committed to compliance with applicable laws and other requirements; ensure management review; assign company representatives to oversee compliance: plan and implement controls; select suppliers based on compliance; establish a means to address concerns and provide corrective actions; communicate openly with auditors; provide access for verification of compliance; and show supporting documentation and records.
