The biggest dam in China is the Three Gorges Dam.It is 183 metres high and over 2 kilometres wide.The dam has helped stop the floods along the Changjiang River.Ships are able to sail along the river as far as Chongqing.This makes Chongqing a large and important port.
Floods are always a problem in China One of the first heroes in Chinese history was an engineer,Xia Yu.He built waterways on the Changjiang River,so that there would not be a floor every time it was never possible to stop all the floods.
The Changjiang River(the name means"Long River"in Chinese) is the longest nver in Asia.One in every 13 people in the world lives near the Changjiang River.Many people have lost their lives in it,drowned in floods.Now the dam can control the floods and benefit the people living along it.
