Like other Asian students who come to America for study, most of Chinese students work very hard, they always take a day even two days of the weekend staying in the laboratory overtime. Thus comparing with American students, they make more achievements.
My mentor, who is Asian, is alcoholic, addicted to tobaccon and irritability. But he appreciates the hard work and the solid foundation of knowledge of the Asian students very much, meanwhile he understands the psychology of Asian students particularly.
Therefore, except for one from Germany, the remaining five of all the six students recruited in his laboratory are Asian.
He simply posts a striking signboard on the laboratory door, which says, the research assistants of this lab must work seven days a week, from 10 am to 12 pm, and spare no effort during working hours.
Well known as the strictest and most demanding teacher college-wide, a total of 14 students are recruited into his laboratory during the three years and a half I have spent there, which reduces to only 5 after PhD graduation.
Regardless of all the dissuasion, I forced myself to accept the mentor's assistance at the summer of 1990, and began the difficult journey of academic pursuit from then on.
