这几句话结构有点乱,能不能请高手帮慢翻译一下,谢谢了
总共是两个小段,第一小段certainly后面的意思没太搞明白；
第二小段,除了第一句明白了,剩下都不太明白.
望高手翻译一下,先谢过了...

But the environmental awareness that is sweeping the world had bypassed the majority of Icelanders. Certainly they were connected to their land, the way one is complicatedly connected to, or encumbered by, family one cant do anything about.
For them the land has always just been there, something that had to be dealt with and, if possible, exploited—the mind-set being one of land as commodity rather than land as, well, priceless art on the scale of the “Mona Lisa.”
