Alice stretched out on the sofa. A doze would do her good. The front door bell woke her and she glanced at the wall clock.An hour had passed.
'Please,hurry,Mrs.Jessop' Alice heard a voice call outside.
'Whatever is the matter?'she asked the man who stood there.It was Alex, one of Lione's closest friends.
He blurted out :'Sorry I have to be the one to tell you,Mrs Jessop.It's Lionel,I'm afraid.Heart attack...fatal.
It happenend so suddenly.'
Alice felt relief as the tears flowed one cue.She had worried about being able to show her grief. Alex comforted her, then as if in a daze she put on her overcoat,and he led her gently to the car. in
It took them 20 minutes to reach the racecourse .Lionel's body was still on the ground.She planned to cradle it lovingly in her arms--but suddenly she felt dizzy.
Faces began to blur.She was going to faint.Lionel's white face,staring up accusingly at her, must have done it.
'Poor woman has passed out,'said Ted, another of Lionel's friends.
'So might you, if you had a shock like that,'Alex snapped.Ted sai:'Fancy Lionel putting 500 pounds on a winner and the having a heart attack when it was disqualified.'
'Never mind that now.'Alex said brusquely.'Lend me a hand with Alice.'
Alex removed the flask from Lionel's pocket and unscrewed it.'It's full,'he said sadly.'Poor fellow didn't have a chance to touch a drop.'
Together they propped up the faintly stitrring Alice and tilted the flask to her lips.
