Peking Opera is quintessentially Chinese.There are two reasons that people call Peking Opera as "Oriental Opera".First,it contains singing,dancing,music,art,literature as well as opera styles similar to those found in the western world's; Second,they are derived from the same classical origin.It has its roots in several ancient local dramas and came into being in Beijing—that’s the reason we call it Peking Opera.In 1790,Anhui's four local drama groups—Sanqing Ban,Sixi Ban,Chungong Ban and Chun Ban—performed successfully in Beijing.At that time,they always cooperated with Handiao artists from Hubei.Therefore,a new drama appeared,with "Er Huang" and "Xi Pi" as it's main aria,Kun Qu,Qin Qiang,Bang Zi…as its supplements.I do not know how to relate to this sentence!.During the next 200 years,the aria,rhythmic spoken part and musical instruments were more and more formalized,hence eventually facilitating the now established form of Peking Opera.
The actions in Peking Opera are inspired from life.Artists recomposed and enriched the actions to make them more beautiful and coherent.Lianpu (Facial Makeup) is a special colorful face-painting to illustrate the specific characters’ characteristics and destinies .Lianpu may help you to understand the stories of the dramas.This is a very important feature in Peking Opera.
Peking Opera became very popular from Qing Dynasty onwards.At that time,famous Peking Opera artists were praised like today's super stars.There were also many renowned Piao You (Peking Opera fans),including Emperor Guangxu who not only could sing and play drum but also knew Jing and Kun aria.Queen Mother Ci Xi was another well-known opera fan.She loved the drama so much that she had a 21-meter-high theater with three floors built in the Summer Palace.It is the biggest theater in China and is still well preserved.
