June 1 marked a big day in the lives of Jeremy and Claire Jungling.
“Today begins an exciting journey for us as we are embarking on an effort to raise funds and awareness
for an organization that has become very meaningful to us,” the husband and wife from Brandon posted
on Facebook.
“In February 2014,we will travel to Tanzania to climb Mt.Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa. We
will climb with the Survivor Summit Foundation for the benefit of LiveStrong. Our goal is to raise $20,000
in support of their free services and assistance to those affected by cancer.”
Amidst the Lance Armstrong doping scandal and the misperception that LiveStrong only caters to cancer
research, the Junglings are working to shed light on the foundation and its whole mission — “To support
those dealing with cancer today and those who will be dealing with cancer tomorrow.”
The Junglings know the domino effect of cancer all too well.Last summer,at age 38,Jeremy Jungling
was diagnosed with colon cancer. He has since undergone surgery and chemotherapy, setting personal
records in a 5K and a marathon while in treatment.A CT scan taken a month and half ago showed no
signs of cancer.
“He’s cancer free!” Claire Jungling exclaimed.
“Right now I have no evidence of cancer,” Jeremy Jungling said.“The studies say if you can make it past
five years, there’s a good chance it won’t come back.
The Junglings have raised $1,160 thus far,and continue to spread the word via Facebook,Twitter and on
their own LiveStrong webpage. At StinkyFeet Athletics in Flowood last month,Claire Jungling manned a
table with information about A Climb for Hope — the first of several events and opportunities over the next few months.StinkyFeet donated 10 percent of its profits that day to the Junglings’ cause.StinkyFeet will
again donate to A Climb for Hope during its monthly $5 for 5K run July 18 at 6:30 p.m.The run starts
outside Genghis Grill at Dogwood Festival Market.
Earlier this year, the Insane Need For Speed Training Group, which includes beginner and experienced
runners, cyclists and triathletes from the metro area, designated one of its regular Saturday morning runs
as “Jeremy Jungling Day” and made a 22-mile double loop around Pelahatchie to promote colon cancer
awareness.
“Claire and I have talked about how this whole thing has been more of blessing than a curse,” Jeremy
Jungling said.“Through this,we were led to do something to help people.”
