Chapter 6 Conclusion
The thesis examined the current status of Chinese students’ access to higher education after reform,especially the existing urban-rural and strata differences among students with different family background and social origin.
It has found that,despite the progress made in equalizing access by strata and urban-rural family origin at the mass higher education level in China,disadvantaged groups remain their status in accessing higher education,as compared to students from advantaged groups that are economically,culturally,and socially superior.They constitute a disproportionate part of the student body in Chinese higher educational institutions.Their access to higher education has not improved much as expected.This needs to be done within an overall improvement of the social and economical environment for disadvantaged groups:the development in their economy,the better financing and job placement policies in higher education,and perhaps an educational program targeting the drop-outs in the countryside.
It would be helpful in future research to examine disadvantaged groups’ collective and/or individual resistance and to see if they act as active agents of change or simply passive receivers of environmental forces.Also helpful would be a more detailed,geography-specific study,for examples,students in western China and minority population.
