“Interest in China is growing dramatically,and I think we’ll see even sharper increases in next year’s report,”said Allan Goodman ,president of the institute .”People used to go to China to study the story and language ,and many still do .But with China looming so large in all our futures ,more students go for an understanding of what’s happening there economically and politically.”
China is now the fifth-most-popular destination for American students .In the 2006-07 school year ,11,064 Americans studied in China.
This is a large jump from 1995-96,when only 1,396 Americans studied there.
Many American universities are hard-pressed to keep up with the interest in China .There are now hundreds of study –abroad programs in China .While most include language study ,some focus on martial arts ,herbal medicine ,culture,history or business.
According to the report ,the number of Chinese students studying at American universities is on the rise ,too ,a 20 percent increase last year.
As the RMB is becoming more expensive against the US dollar ,Chinese students are happy to see their cost for studying abroad has dropped about 15 percent compared to a couple of years ago .But others are concerned that the global financial crisis will lesson their chance to get scholarships.
However ,experts said that influence is limited .“ According to numbers from my agent ,there is still more to study in the US ,” said Sun Nan ,manager at the GlobeEdu ,one of the major agents of studying abroad for Chinese students .”That’s because of the more favorable visa policies to international students and more recruitment from the US universities .”
