This year is the 70th anniversary of the birth of Lei Feng. Lei Feng, as you know, was a young soldier who went out of his way to help others. He was just an ordinary guy but he became a special person and a hero of China because he knew how important it was to help people in need.
Most of us are just ordinary people like Lei Feng. We don't have special skills and we certainly don;t have super powers but all of us can be special people. How? We can volunteer.
When I lived in Canada I loved to do volunteer work. One thing I really enjoyed was delivering "Meals on Wheels.""Meals on Wheels" is a program that brings hot, nutritious meals by car(Wheels!) to the homes of people who are too sick or too old to cook for themselves. The people really appreciated getting the hot food and it made all the volunteers feel wonderful, too.
There are lots of opportunities in Shanghai for you to volunteer. The World Expo, of course, will use thousands of volunteers but volunteers are also needed in your own neighbourhood. Volunteers are needed in local hospitals, old folk's homes, and playgrounds.
Volunteering is a great way to help people, and it's also a great way to help people, and it's also a great way to make new freinds, to learn new skills, and to have fun. Lei Feng would be very proud.
