going into the second half of the 20th centry ,the Uited Stats lead in applied science and technology was broadened to contian many areas of theoretical science .These include nuclear physics ,space exploration and the manipulation of light . One of the most remarkable achievements of the United States' science and technology has been the harnessing of nuclear energy .this achievement was based on scientific concepts developed since since the beginning of the 20th centry .The concepts were provided by scientists of many lands .But the scientific and techologyical effort needed to turn abstract ideas into the reality of nuclear fission was provided in the United States during the early 1940s.Nuclear fission is the generation of energy by splitting the nucei of ceratin atoms .The idea of nuclear fission can be traced to the work between 1901 and 1906 .Two British scientists studied the makeup of the atomic nucleus and concluded that a great store of energy was locked in each nucleus . One of them suggested that a someday that enormous energy might be released .Word leaked out that German scientists had spilt auranium nucleus by bombarding it with subatomic particles . Other nuclear physicists soon realized the significance of this event and concluded that a nuclear chain reaction was achievable .In such a reaction ,the splitting of each nucleus would release particles to split other nuclei .The result would be a tremendous release of energy . Various successes in developing peaceful uses of the atom-nuclear power ,nuclear medicine and a new understanding of physics --have demonstrated man;s creative use of this scientific breakthrough ,which offers a message of hope to balance against our shared anxiety about the destructiv potential of nuclear weapons .
