Khalil Fong
Khalil Fong, born July 14, 1983, is a soul singer and songwriter signed to a label in Hong Kong
Khalil was born in Hawaii and his family moved to Shanghai when he was 6. His father (an American-born Chinese from San Francisco, California) wanted Khalil to learn more about Chinese culture. Six years later, they moved to Guangzhou and lived there for about 2 years. Afterwards, they moved to Hong Kong. His first language is English and he can speak Mandarin, Shanghainese, Hawaiian Pidgin English, and Cantonese.
When he was 16, he sent demos, which he had written, to music producers. Four years later, Warner Music Hong Kong finally recruited him as their producer. And Khalil released his first album Soul Boy on September 18, 2005. He may not be good looking but he is a good singer. He is rather cool with his aviator glasses. His songs have a nice beat and his voice is very pleasant to listen to. Too many Mandopop singers add in random English that makes no sense in context and sounds very strange to the native English-speaker. However, he has sprinkled some very clear and pleasant English throughout his albums. He said that the things he cannot live without are food, water and music!

Soul boy
Khalil is on his best way to super stardom. With seemingly nothing else on his mind but music, singer/composer Khalil has taken the radio stations by storm with his premier hit "Little Sister 妹妹" (Track 3) as well as his follow-up smash "Southern Sounds南音" (Track 8). He topped it all of with his third and the single "Spring Breeze春风吹" (Track 2) that helped him to sky-rocket up the charts. Blessed with a rare talent that amazes fans and critics alike, Khalil's premier CD is jam-packed with his Soul Boy magic!
This love爱爱爱
Khalil is back to carry his soulful melodies higher. Around a year after his debut release, singer/songwriter Khalil further established his reputation by composing the song "Grand Love 大爱" for Andy Hui 's许志安2005 album In The Name Of.... Now, he is here to present This Love, the follow-up album to his Mando-pop CD Soul Boy. Once more unveiling his fine sense of R&B, fans can look forward to 13 tracks including the titular song (Track 1), as well as a remix of his debut album tune "Spring Breeze春风吹" (Track 13).
Wonderland未来
In 2007 Khalil returned to take fans to his new music Wonderland. Influenced by artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Earth, Wind & Fire, Hawaii-born Khalil took Hong Kong by storm with his debut album Soul Boy in late 2005. The soulful R&B of his second album This Love earned him the nickname of "Hong Kong's Jay Chou". Khalil's new Mandarin album features songs like "Park公园" (Track 5), "Simple Is Most Romantic简单最浪漫" (Track 6), and "Future未来" (Track 8). The acoustic version of This Love 爱爱爱(Track 11) has also been included
Orange Moon 橙月
Khalil released his fourth album Orange Moon in December 2008. Taking in influences from soul, jazz, R&B, and adult contemporary music, he has established a unique musical world of his own. Included in his highly anticipated new album will be his new single "Everybody Will每个人都会", a song written for Cartier's charity project, which is consistent with his usual theme of love. Khalil's soft vocals match with Lin Xi 's林夕 lyrical words to make this heartwarming number carrying the notion that "everybody can hold out a hand to the people mired in difficulties".
Having spent his childhood in Shanghai, Khalil decided to shoot the album cover in that city for the romantic feeling she inspires. The album title is similarly romantic, conjuring up images of a setting sun in the dusk sky. The first plug Singalongsong is thematically a follow-up of Love Song from his last album. This English single opens the album, and its Mandarin version "The Song Written for You为你写的歌", penned by Arthur Ma马蒿惟, is available as a bonus track.

Khalil promises everybody a soulful good time with This Love Concert Live 2007.

Khalil’s Words
I can't remember a time when music wasn't in the forefront of my mind. My dad being a drummer always had music around the home and I started playing the drums at around age 4. At 5 I became an avid listener of 1950's Rock'n Roll which was a result of my parents taking me to see the 1980's biographical movie about Rock ‘n Roll legend Ritchie Valens. If not for that film you probably wouldn't find me doing what I'm doing today. Some of my favorite artists from that era are Buddy Holly, Jackie Wilson, Eddie Cockran, The Penguins, Elvis, and Ritchie Valens.
I loved pretending to play guitar and also started singing at friends' party and community functions. Eventually my parents entered me in a contest where I performed Fats Dominos “Blueberry Hill” and won the 1st place winner for the 18 and under age group. I was 5 and a half at the time and hadn't really grasped the understanding that I was in a competition and had won a trophy and a $500 check.
At around eight I had stepped into my Michael Jackson phase. I had kept up with all the albums and taught myself to dance like him so for a very long time that would be my routine whenever I performed publicly. I was nick named “Little Michael Jackson” which is still brought up to me till this day.
In the mid 90's I started listening to Boyz II Men and Babyface. Until then the only R&B/Soul music I listened to was Stevie Wonder (I also have all of his cds). I also started teaching myself to play the guitar mainly influenced by Slow Hand Eric Clapton.
The production work of Babyface was what initially made me attempt song writing. I wrote with my guitar in the beginning but decided to teach myself piano because I had found that there are certain styles that are more piano based and were difficult to get a feel for on the guitar. My first songs were in English but then I of course if I wanted to make a career in Asia I would have to write in Chinese. When I was 17 I started writing my songs in Mandarin and I now have a collection of Mandarin songs.
In recent years I have actually gone back to my 70's influences as there has been a neo-soul movement recalling the sounds of great soul artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Donnie Hathaway, James Brown, Earth Wind & Fire, Isley Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, George Clinton and The Funkadelics etc.
As for music production and arranging I usually have a whole picture and sound at the time I write the song. I pretty much know what I want it to sound like from the beginning and I tend to use sounds and tones of vintage 70's synths and electric pianos.
Main influences: Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, D'Angelo, Steely Dan, N.E.R.D
Producers: N.E.R.D, R. Kelly, Babyface
Favorite Music: Soul, Neo-Soul, Jazz, 50's Doowop and Rock.
Soul Artists: Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Earth Wind & Fire
Neo-Soul Artists: D'Angelo, Glenn Lewis, Musiq
Jazz Artists: Bill Evans, Chet Baker, John Coltrane.
50's Artists: Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, Jackie Wilson
When I was six, my family moved to Shanghai. My dad is from America, but he wanted to go back to China so that I could learn about Chinese culture and not be totally alienated from it.
1991 was a really good time to come back. China had just opened up to the rest of the world. I got to see a lot of stuff at an early age. My parents put me in local school so that I could be immersed in the culture.
Chinese people are unique. They’re very hardworking and have lots of fire, but at the same time they adapt to different conditions and circumstances well.
But I don’t see myself as Chinese. I’m a world citizen.
Somebody told me the world is one country and that all of mankind is its citizens. That’s a good sentiment for this moment in time.
I write music with my soul. I write songs that I believe in and I want people to be affected by. I want to share my emotions and what I see in life.
Music to me is one of the most unique expressions we have on earth. It’s a very powerful tool that can do a lot of good. But it can do a lot of bad too.
My parents are both Baha’i. But I was not born into this religion. I decided I wanted to become Baha’i when I turned 15, the legal age to make such decision.
Baha’i has about a 160-year history. We believe that all religions are from one god, and come in cycles. Buddha, Jesus, Mohammad, Abraham... they are all prophets from one religion.
God shows up as a prophet at different points in time. And each prophet has a purpose, to bring direction to the world.
I have lived in Hong Kong for 11 years. I like it here. Hong Kong is very international, but unreal at the same time—it’s like the most unaffected place in the whole world. However, this also makes it hard to see what’s really happening outside of our world here.
It’s almost like a highly evolved safe house. We have everything at the tip of our fingers, but we are very protected and enclosed.
The one thing I hate is that it is getting more polluted here. When we have an environment that has given us so much, we should give back.
The more you give, the more you get—that’s a universal law. It may not be immediate, but it will come.
Knowing you could have done more but didn’t is a severe punishment.
For me, hell is being away from someone you love. Spiritually speaking, it is when a soul is so far from God that he doesn’t recognize beauty anymore.
I don’t believe Michael Jackson is a child molester. He never had a proper childhood, and that might make him misunderstood.
If you can learn to be happy without relying on material things, that’s when you’re really happy.
Tangible things don’t matter. It’s the things that we can’t see with our own eyes that will keep us happy in the long run.
“What’s up?” is my motto. You say “what’s up?” to someone, and everyone in the world is your friend. This attitude would really help a lot of people in how they see the world.
