补译法就是在直译的基础上,适当补充一些原习语所隐含的文化信息,以便使读者更好地理解译文,也被称为直译加注法.这样既把原习语的意思表达清楚了,同时又保留了原语的文化韵味.比如“三个臭皮匠顶个诸葛亮”, 若直译为 “Even three common cobblers can surpass Zhuge Liang”的话,只译出字面含义,没有译出其隐含意义,尤其没有译出“诸葛亮”这个文化意象.因为它不仅仅是人名,还是智慧的象征,因此,如果将其译成“Even three common cobblers can surpass Zhuge Liang,the master mind”,效果就明显增强了,加上的补译“the master mind”,起到画龙点睛的作用.
汉语习语中也常有并列的对偶结构,即用两个不同的喻体表达相同的寓意,前后含义重复.遇到这种情况就可用节译法处理,省去并列重复部分,如“铜墙铁壁”译为“wall of bronze”,不必说成“wall of copper and iron”, “长吁短叹”用节译法译为“sighing deeply”.
