首先要说的是：计算机的结构。在计算机基础课上，我们已经知道，现代计算机基本都是冯·诺依曼式的——具有五大基本结构：运算器、控制器、储存器、输入设备、输出设备（运算器+控制器=CPU CPU+存储器+主机）其中很容易看到控制器和运算器是计算机的核心，从计算机的发展来看运算是计算机的存在价值，运算器则是其大脑。这五大结构总的来说是计算机存在的物质基础。当这些物质基础有机结合在一起，再加上人类为其量身定作的软件系统就成了真正意义上的计算机。而所谓计算机软件系统就是计算机的思维。这种软件系统可以说是计算机硬件储存信息的形式，可以是我们平时常见的各种办公系统、拥护程序、操作程序、语言处理程序、诊断程序等，也可以是磁盘中磁针以“0” “1”形式储存的信息。
其次要说的是计算机的作用：计算机的五大物质基础加上人类为其量身打造的软件系统，就会产生相当惊人的奇迹，这种奇迹巨大的改变了我们的生产生活，大大推动了我们科技、文化、教育的发展，甚至影响了一个国家的国防，带动了整个人类社会的进步。计算机的出现更是成为第五次信息革命的标志。
