Dear Tom,
It is great to receive your email. Now I’d like to tell you something that took place in my school yesterday. In the afternoon we held a growing-up ceremony for our coming 18-year-old birthday. At first we made an oath that as grown-ups we should have a sense of duty for our society from now on. Then we showed our thanks to our parents who had gone through hardships to bring us up and teachers who have been educating us patiently. And our teachers also gave us cards expressing their good wishes to us. Finally, we put on wonderful performances, singing and dancing. We learned a lot from the activity. I think it’s very important for us. I will remember the day in my life.
Yours,
Li Hua

(Text 1)
W: Excuse me? Could you please keep these valuables for me? My room number is 609.
M: No problem. Would you please sign your name here?
(Text 2)
W: The car seems to be running very well, Mike.
M: Yes, it should be. It cost me 200 dollars to have it repaired last week.
(Text 3)
W: What do you think of these?
M: Oh, they're really nice. But I don’t need new sneakers. I already have a pair. What I
really need is a pair of shoes to wear to work in the office.
(Text 4)
W: I heard you have a great new boss.
M: Yeah, Mr Watson. He’s very intelligent. He invented some products that have made a
lot of money for our company. And he never shouts at people.
W: You' re lucky.
(Text 5)
M: Well, it looks like you' ve got the flu.
W: Is it serious, Doctor?
M: Don’ t worry. Just stay at home for at least one day and get some rest. And drink plenty
of water and take some vitamin C.
(Text 6)
M: Excuse me, is this seat taken?
W: No, go ahead, sit down.
M: Sorry to bother you, but the cafe is so crowded today, and this is the only seat left.
W: Yeah, I know. But it's normally deserted at this time of the day.
M: That' s why I come here ---it' s usually so quiet and peaceful. I can relax and enjoy my
coffee and read the newspaper.
W: Me, too. But today it' s unusually busy and noisy.
M: Well, thanks for sharing your table with me.
W: Oh, no problem.
(Text 7)
M: I heard that you and your husband bought a new house.
W: Yeah, we're moving out to the country. The house is about thirty minutes from the
city.
M: Congratulations! So, tell me about the house.
W: Well, it has three bedrooms, a living room with a fireplace, two bathrooms, and a
swimming pool.
M: Really? A swimming pool?
W: Well, just a small one in the back yard. You can come over and go swimming sometime.
M: Thanks, I will! So does the house have a garden?
W: Yes. There are a lot of trees, so it' s quiet and private.
M: Wow. It sounds like a dream home.
(Text 8)
W: Have you been to the new sports centre, Jack?
M: Yes, Diana. It' s not cheap but it' s big and light.
W: Does bus eighteen go there?
M: That's right. It takes fifteen minutes. Don't get bus twenty-five because you have to
walk a long way.
W: I like doing sport early in the morning. Is it open at seven?
M: Yes, you can go there from six, except on Sundays. Then it doesn't open until nine.
The swimming pool has good hot showers; you have to bring your own towel but you
can get soap there. They don' t make you wear a swimming cap.
W: Do they sell things to eat there?
M: Only sandwiches; they don' t sell drinks. I usually take some fruit.
W: I' d love to go with you next week. How about Wednesday?
M: OK. See you then.
(Text 9)
W: Hi, Steven. What do you have there?
M: It' s an electronic organizer. It has a built-in cell phone, a digital voice recorder, and a
digital camera! I can use it to make phone calls, take electronic notes, send and receive
e-mail, surf the Internet, and even take digital pictures!
W: Wow, that' s cool! Can I use it?
M: Sure.
W: Oh! It' s so tiny and lightweight!
M: Yes. It' s very useful.
W: What is the built-in voice recorder? And when would you ever need to use it?
M: It can record up to an hour of talking -- it has some kind of computer chip inside. I don't
know how it works. But I' m going to use it for school, to record my lectures, and then
listen to them later when I study.
W: That' s a good idea. What a great invention!
(Text 10)
W: Thank you for coming to this meeting for students who will stay at school during the winter holidays. It is my duty to tell you what to do and to have you fill out forms giving the dates you will be at school. To cut down the cost, Buller Hall will be the only house for you to stay at. All the other houses will close at 5:00 p.m., on Friday, February 7~ and will not reopen until 6:00 p.m., on February 16. Once we have your forms, we '11 offer you rooms in Buller Hall. Please move all the things you will need to your new rooms by the 7th. Some places of our school will be closed during the holidays. They are the labs, the school store and the dance hall. The library and the computer centre will be open, though with shorter service times. Only the post office and most school offices will keep their usual hours. Of course, you don't have to worry about your meals. If you have any special problems, please call me at my office before February.
