Trienoic fatty acids (TAs),hexadecatrienoic acid
(16:3) and linolenic acid (18:3),are the major polyunsaturated
fatty acid species in membrane lipids.
Increasing TAs in chloroplast membranes has been
shown to enhance low temperature tolerance in plants

extrachloroplastic membranes,were increased by
overexpressing an ER localized x-3 fatty acid desaturase
FAD3 gene,no significant differences were
detected between wild type and transgenic tobacco for
resistance to chilling and freezing
