The early 1990s marked a turning point in terms of energy supplies in the region as it increased output of oil and natural gas.The share of total supply accounted for by oil has been shrinking,while the share of natural gas has been on the rise.The share of renewable sources in total supply varies across countries.For Costa Rica and Paraguay,90% of the energy matrix is made up of renewable(non-wood-based) sources,and oil accounts for less than 2% of primary energy sources.Hydroelectricity makes up a very large of Brazil’s energy matrix (nearly 90%),and the country has implemented a very successful long-term strategy for the development of its biofuels industry.At the other extreme,the renewable energy index for the eastern Caribbean puts these sources at far below 5% of the total energy supply.In Mexico,renewable sources were slightly above 105 of the total in 2002,but have since dropped below that figure.
