I arrived in New York for a meeting.When I walked out of the airport,a shining taxi pulled up.The driver rushed to open the passenger door for me and made sure I was comfortably seated before he closed it.As he got into the driver’s seat,he mentioned that the neat New York Times next to me was for my use.He then showed me several tapes and asked me what type of music I would enjoy or if I just wanted some light chat.I couldn’t believe the service I was receiving and was suddenly interested in the taxi driver more than anything else.
When asked,he said “I used to work in GE.But I got tired of thinking I couldn’t be the best in the field.I decided to make a change.And I love driving cars,so here I am.However,I don’t want to be a regular taxi driver,but a professional driver and the best in this business.I’d have to exceed the customer’s expectations.I like the idea of being ‘great’ better than just getting by on ‘average.’”
He also told me that by providing best service he got tips which also well exceeded the salary he used to get from GE.And of course I tipped him too.
When the taxi arrived at my destination,I noticed I learned a precious lesson from the taxi drive.All work is important and therefore should be undertaken with ever-possible excellence.
