BEIJING,Jan.23 (Xinhuanet) -- After trekking 1-thousand-300 kilometers China's 27th expedition to the Antarctic is over.The weary travelers arrived back at their base camp in Zhong-shan Station.
Their mission lasted more than a month and,during their stay near the South Pole the team helped with construction projects and set up an unmanned weather station.
With understanding at a premium over changing weather patterns,its hoped the Chinese mission to the pole will help build a greater understanding of climate change.Scientists say that they are racing against the time when they conduct research at the South Pole.
It's one o'clock in the morning.Some are taking a short nap before reaching the next research station,while others continue working.
Huo Yuanzi,Expedition Member,said,"No,we can't sleep because we haven't finished the research at the last station.Time is quite limited,and we need to finalize a lot of sample collecting."
Zhang Yongshan,Leader of Antarctica Expection Dayang Team,said,"Sometimes we can't sleep for three or four days."
Not only the expedition team,the vessel and helicopter are also being worked hard,helping support the scientific research.The vessel "Snow Dragon" has been breaking ice around the clock.It can cover a distance of more than 100 kilometers per day.The helicopter in constant use despite the harsh condition of Antarctica.
Ma Dechi,Helicopter Captain,27th Antarctica Expection Team,said,"We flew 80 hours over 9 days.That's 9 hours of flight time a day on average,It's a very intense workload.Its usual workload is 35 hours a week in China."
Liu Shunlin,Chief,27th Antarctica Expection Team,said,"China's Antarctic expedition and research started not as early as some developed countries.The expedition takes an important role in the research on global warming,so we feel great responsibility,and time is quite limited."
China has established three Antarctica research stations since 1984.So far,more than 20 countries have set up more than 80 such stations in the area,and the number is still growing each year.
