A name in blue
Bonnadilla benson never liked the fact that she had been named for an apartment house. The time she hated it most, however, was the time when she hated everything most–when she was 15 years old.
“They are call me bonnie at school “she told her mother.“They always have. They think it is real name and if they discover it isn’t,I will die, that is all; I will die.How could you have done such s thing to me,named me a name like that,a little baby like I was!”
“Oh,it was that summer before you were born,” said her mother with a gentle remembering look that bonnadilla hated.“It was the first time, the only time we ever lived in New York City.I have told you. That hot,hot summer.I would walk a longer route to shop just to walk along that pretty street. There was a line of houses with real little gardens in front, and flowers, and old cats asleep under bushes-but there were gardens.I walked slowly; and you were soon to be born.”
“Oh,Mother!” said bonnadilla.
“I never was so happy, before or since.I was so happy I felt as if I was dreaming all the time.I loved that city, noise, dirt, and all.”
“I wish I had been born there and stayed there. This old place.Mason city is the only town I ever visit.”
“They still had some horses in those days, and sometimes there would be a horse with a bag of food over his nose. And often the food would fall out of the bag into the street, and the birds would some to eat it all, jumping around his legs as if they were-I don’t know-rocks or mountains or something safe like that. And in the gardens in September,if I went out early enough,I would see the flowers before the dust of the city gathered on them, fresh and perfectly clean.”
But tell me about the apartment house.”
It was there, next to these gardens houses bonadilla apartments. That is what it said in letters cut in stone on the front, the name was also at the entrance to the building, and on the side of the building in large letters of blue paint.Maybe they even had it written on the roof for the airplanes to see.I don’t suppose the building was anything special but I thought it liked wonderful. There was a man to open the door, you know; and the name-I thought it was a lively name –was all part of that last wonderful summer. So when you were born,a month after your father died-e died exactly a month before you were born-“

Bonnadilla benson
