However,there are situations which we do not control.
Some environmental problems are documented as having
natural causes and have occurred repeatedly in the Earth's
history.Several such concerns are global climate change,
acid rain,carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere,geological
disasters,and other natural hazards.Certainly,
humankind may exacerbate these problems,but perhaps
we cannot prevent them.
The earth has been experiencing climate variations for
over 3.5 billion years,resulting in hot and cold periods.
However,we are not altogether certain as to why.Ice cores
in Antarctica and Greenland demonstrate prehistoric periods
with elevated CO 2 content in the atmosphere.In
these same cores,there is also clear evidence for acid
precipitation prior to any human interference in climate
processes.There are several plausible explanations for naturally
recurring atmospheric and climatic variations,in-
Cluding volcanic ash and gaseous emanations; global sea
level change and polar ice melting due to warmer sea
currents; increase or decrease in vegetative cover,natural
grass,and forest fires due to lightening strikes,meteorite
or comet impacts,and,not the least,plate tectonics.
Industrial activity certainly may enhance certain negative
trends,but we may not be able to reverse or alter these
trends,even if the addition of all the CO2 and acidic gases
to the atmosphere instantaneously is halted.We must learn
specifically how to lessen humanity's impact and how to
live with a naturally changing environment.
What then are the appropriate responses?Why would
you or I,or a company,make a decision to contaminate,
for example,a naturally pure water source?--I propose the
answers is either through greed or ignorance in the vastmajority of cases; these are two basic reasons that are
unacceptable to the environmentally aware society.Both
greed and ignorance must be addressed in our educational
systems.
