The prevalent tribulations with heavy metals are that they are persistent and they bioaccumulate in the time periods (Anu et al.,2009).So,in addition to posing a threat to various coastal ecosystems like mangroves,seagrasses and corals around the world,toxic metals also pose a long-term public health risk,especially for the human population that relies on fishery resources.In an area like Andaman islands,which is known as one of the biodiversity hot spots of the country,where the lives of people have higher dependents on the waters surrounding them either by way of fishing or tourism and other related activities,even a small variation in the sea surrounding them can cause severe impact on their life and property.Information regarding the heavy metal concentration in the marine sediments of the Andaman and Nicobar region is limited (Sanzgiry and Braganca,1981,Sen Gupta et al.,1981,Mukherjee and Mehrotra,1992 and Ramesh et al.,2006) and are at selected locations and not covering all the ecosystems.An assessment is thus necessary to appraise the concentration of heavy metals in different coastal ecosystems of the Andaman region so as to understand the present condition of the ecosystems and to compile the baseline data for future monitoring.But,there is no data on the distribution and concentration of metals in different coastal ecosystems prevailing in the same eco-region which is essential to understand the vulnerability of these ecosystems to the heavy metal pollution.Hence,the present study was carried out on the distribution pattern of heavy metals viz.Al,Cd,Co,Cr,Cu,Fe,Mg,Mn,Ni,Pb and Zn in the sediments of mangroves (MG),seagrasses (SG),dead corals (DC) and sandy beach (SB) environs of the Andaman Islands.
