Serine proteases have been implicated in a number of organisms as regulators of differentiation (Ochi 1985; Gibb and Strohl 1987; Kang et al.1995; Kim and Lee 1996).The application of specific protease inhibitors to the surface of growing M.echinospora cultures,prior to sporulation,revealed the inhibition of sporulation by serine protease inhibitors (chymotrypsin-like and trypsin-like proteases).This coordination of protease production and development has previously been shown in Streptomyces lactamdurans with an asporulant mutant unable to produce proteases or antibiotics (Ginther 1978).It has also been demonstrated that the addition of inhibitors to growing submerged cultures of S.albidoflavus resulted in the inhibition of sporulation,suggesting an essential role for proteases in the development of these organisms (Kang et al.1995).It remains to be seen whether these proteases are activating pro-proteins such as nucleases (Niciezaet al.1999) or are activated as part of a developmental regulon such as the A-factor regulatory cascade of Streptomyces griseus (Kato et al.2005).These data would,however,suggest that proteases play an integral role in the development of filamentous actinomycetes,and obvious parallels can be drawn with eukaryotic apoptosis-like events (Ginter 1978; Kang et al.1995; Fernandez and Sanchez 2002).The importance of such proteins in the organised processing of pro-proteins such as nucleases (Nicieza et al.1999) and the dismantling of cell structure,rather than uncoordinated autolysis (Miguelez et al.1999),makes an attractive hypothesis for studying development of bacteria and the evolutionary important processes of cell death.
