What's the difference of"rather than"and"instead of"?

What's the difference of"rather than"and"instead of"?
both of them mean "而不是" in Chinese.but,are there any differences between them?please explain for me.Thanks.

Rather than的意思是比起什么什么更倾向于什么什么,更喜欢,更重要,放在不同的句子有不同的中文解释办法.
Instead of的意思是代替,是用前面的代替后面的,强调的是代替的结果.
这两个词组有意思重叠的部分,但是各有各的用法,不能只背解释,要结合句子理解,区别自然就明白了.
