China's cartoon industry shows great potential
New industry with great potential
"It was the worst of times; it was the best of times." Financial crisis can be transformed into an opportunity for the development of cultural industries.The "counter-cyclical" of cultural development has allowed the Chinese cartoon industry to thrive in the financial tsunami.
On March 18,the world's largest international cartoon expo,"Tokyo International cartoon expo" kicked off in Japan.Among more than 700 booths,"China Pavilion" with its red background was particularly eye-catching.This was the first time China has participated as a nation and also the first time ever for the establishment of a national exhibit hall.
On May 3,the Fifth China International Cartoon Festival concluded in Hangzhou.According to statistics,this animation festival attracted a total of 780,000 people from 38 countries and regions to participate and the total volume of transactions exceeded more than 6.53 billion yuan.
At present,the Chinese cartoon industry group has come into existence.The "2009 China Radio,Film and Television Development Report" showed that a number of cartoon industry groups have been formed in areas like the Yangtze River Delta,South China,North China,Northeast China,Southwest China and Central regions of China.
According to "2007-2008 Analysis and Investment Consulting report of China's cartoon industry",there were at least 50 million cartoon consumers among 1.3 billion Chinese.China now has more than 5,000 cartoon enterprises,but an output value of only 30 billion yuan.Experts estimate that China's cartoon industry still has 30 billion yuan development opportunity.
Market-oriented model
"Some people thought that it was 500-chapter cartoons together with mass media's publicity that guaranteed the success of 鈥楬appy Sheep'; In fact,the more profound reason was the marketing." Liu Yong,supervisor of the operation center of Shanghai Wenguang media group said,"Viewing from the experiences of the two major cartoon production countries,the United States and Japan,the biggest profit comes from the exploitation and production of derivative produces rather than the sales of copyright."
In the revenue from "Happy Sheep",only 30% came from the proceeds of broadcast copyright,and the remaining 70% came from the image authorization of derivative products.The circulation of comic book "Happy Sheep and Gray Wolf" exceeded two million copies,earning more than 20 million yuan.A wide range of derivative products continuously came out such as DVD's,network authorization,film books,toys,products,food and beverages etc.The successful marketing strategy made more and more people feel that "this sheep has become popular".
"The success of 鈥楬appy Sheep' came from active product research,elaborate planning,excellent resources conformity as well as orderly implementation." Zhong Luming,planner of this cartoon believed that this kind of marketing mode can be used as a reference by every Chinese cartoon enterprise.
"China's cartoon enterprises need to enhance their visions,awareness and sense." Lu Yongqiang,general manager of Guangdong original impetus Culture and Communication Co.,Ltd.said,"In the future,among the total revenue,the proportion of derivative products authorization will become bigger and bigger while the ratio of sale of broadcasting rights is getting smaller and smaller.
Good story matters most
In 2008,Hollywood Panda "Abao" swept the world and sold back to China.When Hollywood skillfully applied Chinese elements,a question was put forward to Chinese:"kung fu and giant pandas are both China's national treasure,why can't we produce this kind of cartoon?"
The recently released "2009 China's Cultural Industry development Report" showed that among the top 20 Chinese young people's favorite cartoon images,19 of which were from overseas,the only local cartoon image was "Monkey King".
"What lessons should Chinese cartoon makers draw from Hollywood?It is how to vividly deliver a story." Mark Osborne,director of "Kung Fu Panda" said that a Hollywood story-telling approach can be employed around the whole world.It was full of imagination and capable of attracting the audience's soul easily.
The outdated plot,lack of the sense of humor and old-fashioned story made China's cartoons loose their vitality.
"In Chinese culture,the story of the wolf and the sheep has been popular for long periods.The 鈥楬appy Sheep and Gray Wolf" compromised a variety of humor,and thoroughly abandoned the way of dull preaching." Wang Lei,vice president of Shanghai Xuandong media and Entertainment Company considered that China has no lack of good stories.Folk tales and classic literary works in China are both inexhaustible source for cartoon production.Currently the issue of most concern for the Chinese cartoon industry is how to creatively express a story.
