对隐喻的研究最早可以追溯到2000多年前亚里斯多德的《论修辞》,隐喻一直是修辞学研究的主要内容之一.隐喻的特点是本体和喻体之间的相似性（resemblance）,隐喻利用一种概念表达另一种概念,而且往往借助于表示具体事物的词语来表达抽象的概念.在隐喻结构中,两种通常看来毫无联系的事物被相提并论,是因为人们在认知领域对他们产生了相似联想,因而利用对两种事物感知的交融来解释、评价、表达他们对客观现实的真实感受和感情.人们常常用一些能够亲身直接体验到的知识来理解较为抽象的、复杂的事物,参照他们熟知的、有形的、具体的概念来认识、思维、经历和对待无形的、难以定义的概念,形成了一个不同概念之间相互关联的认知方式.
