Protesting Ethnic Strife in Russia

MOSCOW — After weeks of rising tensions,a few thousand people gathered here on Sunday to protest ethnic violence and to call on the authorities to refrain from crackdowns that would curtail Moscow’s diversity.
The demonstration,one of the largest in recent memory by liberal groups,was held under the slogan “Moscow for All.” It was organized in reaction to a wave of disturbances（骚乱）across the country between ethnic Russians and migrants from the North Caucasus（北高加索）.
The friction（摩擦）burst into the open this month when a soccer fan was killed in a brawl（争吵,打架）with migrants from the North Caucasus.Thousands of soccer fans,supported by Russian ultranationalists(极端民族主义者),responded by carrying out a raucous（沙哑的,刺耳的）protest near Red Square（红场）that shocked the country.
Since then,the authorities have detained thousands of people on both sides across Russia to forestall more violence.
Prime Minister Vladimir V.Putin publicly backed the soccer fans last week,suggesting that if tensions did not subside,the government might restrict internal migration.The North Caucasus is part of Russia,but because most of its people are Muslim,they are often considered to be foreigners by ethnic Russians（俄罗斯族人）.
Mr.Putin and President Dmitri A.Medvedev have appealed for tolerance,asking soccer fans not to be manipulated（操作）by Russian ultranationalists.
But those at the demonstration on Sunday indicated that they did not think the government had gone far enough in defending Moscow as a multicultural city.
The authorities in Moscow have often prevented groups opposed to the government from demonstrating,but they granted a permit for the protest on Sunday,and it occurred without interference（干涉,冲突）from the police.
A film director,Valery P.Todorovsky,told the crowd that he feared for the city’s future.He said he knew people who were not ethnic Russians who were worried about venturing onto the streets.“These are our fellow citizens,our friends,our relatives — it’s very simple,” he said.
