Second of all,he can record his voice on some media to replay and check his progress.He can ask his Chinese friends or classmates to point out all the errors and give corrections.This way he does not need to chat with people face-to-face.And he can still practise mandrin no worse than other ways.
Thirdly,he can watch Chinese programs online or TV.It is better if he can control the pace of the program so that he can imitate after each line.This way he can improve his intonation and pronunciation and so on.And he can turn to dictionaries if he comes across some unfamiliar words and expressions.
