In order to make a “Classroom-Praise –Sandwich”,as a language teacher,you must create a safe classroom first.That is to say that the language teacher must understand how students feel when learning a new language.Students who are self-confident and feel good themselves are more willing to take chances and make mistakes in speaking the new language the anxious students.So some experts suggest that teachers do some efforts to create safe classroom environments.
How do teachers create safe classrooms?
First,in a safe classroom,
a.Teachers are confident about their teaching methods and have warm relationships with their students;
b.Teachers respect the students and encourage the students to respect each other;
c.Teachers encourage laughter and a sense of play in class;
d.Teachers create a relaxed and happy atmosphere where students trust that the teacher and the other students will not criticize them harshly or their mistakes;
e.Teachers can help students feel free to communicate and express themselves with the knowledge that mistakes are a normal part of this progress.
Second,teachers can create safe classrooms by being relaxed about their own mistakes.For example,a teacher can encourage students to try to catch the spelling mistakes the teacher makes on the blackboard.“Oh,thank you for catching my mistakes.You ‘re very intelligent today!” If teachers can admit their mistakes and correct them without being embarrassed,students will also feel more relaxed about their own mistakes.
How do teachers handle mistakes in a safe classroom?First,it is important to respect the students and recognize that they are doing their best.Second,mistakes are seen as a normal part of learning a language; in fact,mistakes are seen as something good; third,teachers should encourage students by the way they correct mistakes.A very important ingredient of the safe classroom is to give lots of praise and encouragement.With praise,students are encouraged to communicate with each other without undue concern for correctness.Students are never made to feel ashamed of mistakes.
If you’ve solved the above problems,you’ve got a PRAISE SANDWICH(“表扬三明治”).The sandwich whose filling is ‘CORRECT’ that is made as follows:
*PRAISE the students for trying;
e.g.Student:“I write a diary yesterday.”
Teacher:“Good try,but not quite right.Who can help him?”
*CORRECT the student gently or ask another student to give the correct answer and have the first student repeat it.
e.g.Another student:“ I wrote a diary yesterday.”
Teacher:“Good.Can you repeat that?”
Student:“ I wrote a diary yesterday.”
PRAISE the student for the correct response,and get the whole class to repeat it,and then write it on the blackboard if you want to emphasize it.
e.g.Teacher:“ Excellent.Everyone repeat this.”
Whole class:“ I wrote a diary yesterday.”
Teacher:“ Very good!EVERY DAY,I write a diary.YESTERDAY,I wrote a diary.And tomorrow I’ll write a diary.”
In this way,you can get a very nice PRAISE CIRCLE.In another word,using the PRAISE SANDWICH helps students feel good about participating.Even though students make mistakes,they and the whole class learn from these mistakes and everyone feels free to speak again and again.Using the PRAISE SANDWICH is just one way to help create safe classrooms.
