Let us make a cut between hippies and eccentrics. How are they similar? There is a fine disregard of conventional conventions. How are they different? The eccentric is concerned with the world in some form or another; the hippie is concerned mainly with himself.
This is strong distinction that I make for the Cambridge scene where I work and teach. It may not be true elsewhere. At first glance you cannot distinguish one from the other in Harvard Square. But the eccentrics attend a few pot parties, try LSD once and then stay away from it,and are immersed in one or another branch of learning or art.Hippies attend few discussions, colloquiums,or exhibits.get hung up on psychedelic drugs and dabble only with what evokes an immediate, capricious response.Eccentrics may turn hippie; so far I know of no hippies turned eccentric.
The greatest immediate distinction lies in the language used.A predoctoral candidate in philosophy,an eccentric last year, turned hippie and has left Harvard. When I spoke to him a few weeks ago,he talked in this vein:"Like, man, there's nothing here to keep me; Like, you know, the stuff doesn't turn me on anymore." He was not merely acting, for I heard him later talking to some of his friends this way.The language does not convey meaning so much as mood(like bird calls) and changes from month to month in its accepted vocabulary.
At present, the common cause between eccentric and hippie is proper hatred of the way things are,and the common inclination is for personal justice. But the first tries to understand what, say, our government is attempting; the other doesn't even try. Both fly the same banner,"Make love - not war",but the eccentric plea will carry a footnote,"Won't you try to explain?"
