郁离子对执政的人说：“天下公认为珍贵的东西,是因为它稀少并且难以得到.假使明珠像沙子一样多,黄金像泥土一样多,人们都能得到,怎么能成为珍贵的东西呢?所以官服有等级标志,爵位有等级差别,使人不可以有非分之望,然后王命受到尊崇,而荣辱才得以通行,这是鼓舞天下人的珍贵之物.
从前赵王得到一块产自于阗的美玉,把它制成酒器,并说：‘这酒器用于向有功的人赏赐酒食.’邯郸被围困后,魏公子信陵君窃符救赵,解除围困,赵王跪拜,用玉制酒器给魏公子敬酒,魏公子拜谢赵王的嘉奖.因此鄗南之战以后,赵王没有什么作为奖赏,就用那只玉制酒器向将士敬酒,将士用此酒器饮酒,都感到非常高兴.因此赵国人认为能用此酒器饮酒,比十辆兵车的禄爵还要贵重.后来,新赵王用此酒器给那些舔痔疮的宠臣敬酒.就在这时,秦国攻打赵国,大将李牧击退了秦兵,赵王又拿此酒器来给将士敬酒,将士们都很愤怒,不肯用此酒器饮酒.因此同是这只酒器,使用不恰当,反把宝贵的东西变成贱物了.这是不知道宝物贵重所在啊!”
