Confucius was born in State Lu and he is a great thinker,educator,and philosopher of the late Spring and Autumn Period.It has been said that he had more than 3000 students,of whom 72 were excellent and famous.He traveled to 14 states with his students and compiled shi,shu,li,yue,zhouyi and chunqiu.His thoughts were valuable in conducting education,government construction and the social life,thus earning great respect from most Chinese people.
As we all know,Confucius is a great thinker,educator and philosopher and his teaching styles were unique,it is heuristic teaching.In his teachings,Confucius emphasized personal and governmental morality,correctness of social relationships,justice,traditionalism and sincerity,which has had tremendous influence on Chinese history,ideology and culture.This is why we Chinese people are regard as a collectivism and altruism nation.One of the famous sayings of Confucius is“what you do not want done to yourself,do not do to others.”The saying is so famous that I know it when I was young.In our life there are too many things that we cannot control and unavoidably we will conflict with others in some aspects,if we can think more about others,there will be more harmony instead of confliction.So with the influence of this idea we Chinese people are very self-effacing and always have others concerned in mind,which is called altruism.And it is a great difference between Chinese and English culture.So we can say that the saying is the generalization of this feature of Chinese people.
To make it easy to understand,I’ll give you some simple examples.
One day you are very tired and eagerly want to have a good rest,but your roommates didn’t notice your coming in and go on playing cards nearby with loud laughter.Then you can tell them that you want to have a good rest and usually they will be quiet or stop playing because they are influenced by Confucius’s philosophy of getting along with each other,especially the saying “what you do not want done to yourself,do not do to others.” We can say that if a man has the consciousness of the idea,he probably has a harmony relationship with others.
Here is the other example.If the boss knows that some employee is unwell,he would offer to ask him/her to have a rest instead of working with difficulties.For he knows if he is in the same situation he would also want to have a rest rather than working.And the boss would probably be respected by his workers.
But nowadays there are fewer people obey the rules that Confucius left.For instance,some doctors treat the patients blindly only to get more money,a few labor contractors don’t pay money to his labors,some officers use his authority to do some harmful things to the public,etc.Through these examples we can see the great importance of Confucius’s thought.In my opinion,if we can insist the Confucianism
constantly,we have already finished the construction of the harmony society.
Although Confucianism is an ancient thought,it has great significance on conducting our life and development,so it is worthy of learning it well and practicing it in social life,to cultivate ourselves to become a better man.And as a result,the whole society will be filled up with love and happiness.
