顾炎武,字宁人,原名绛,昆山人.明诸生.生而双瞳,中白边黑.读书目十行下.见明季多故,讲求经世之学.明南都亡,奉嗣母王氏避兵常熟.昆山令杨永言起义师,炎武及归庄从之.鲁王授为兵部司务,事不克,幸而得脱,母遂不食卒,诫炎武弗事二姓.唐王以兵部职方郎召,母丧未赴,遂去家不返.炎武自负用世之略,不得一遂,所至辄小试之.垦田於山东长白山下,畜牧於山西雁门之北、五台之东,累致千金.遍历关塞,四谒孝陵,六谒思陵,始卜居陕之华阴.谓“秦人慕经学,重处士,持清议,实他邦所少;而华阴绾毂关河之口,虽足不出户,亦能见天下之人、闻天下之事.一旦有警,入山守险,不过十里之遥;若有志四方,则一出关门,亦有建瓴之便”.乃定居焉.
生平精力绝人,自少至老,无一刻离书.所至之地,以二骡二马载书,过边塞亭障,呼老兵卒询曲折,有与平日所闻不合,即发书对勘;或平原大野,则於鞍上默诵诸经注疏.
炎武之学,大抵主于敛华就实.凡国家典制、郡邑掌故、天文仪象、河漕兵农之属,莫不穷原究委,考正得失,撰天下郡国利病书百二十卷;别有肇域志一编,则考索之馀,合图经而成者.精韵学,撰音论三卷,又广交贤豪长者,虚怀商榷,不自满假.
