厦门大学杨信章教授的《新编语言学》里第二章的课后习题:
Do you think spelling is the same as pronunciation in English? If not, give three examples and then make a comment.
Here's my answer:
In my opinion, spelling is not the same as pronunciation in English.Although in most English words, orthography is always correspondent to phonology,we can still find some exceptions.Examples:Czech,cello,Cafe,chalet,debut,etc.We can found that the English words which spelling is not correspondent to its pronounciation are mostly loan words. Some history events, like Roman Conquest and Norman Conquest may contribute to that.Normans had brought about many changes to English words and had a great impact to it.
In some words,a certain letter are not articulate, for instance,in these words:debt, comb, viscount, island, hour, indict, there all exist some letters without articulation.
And some composition in lettering also have different articulations, such as ough. For example,in this sentence:Though the rough cough and hiccough plough me through,I ought to cross the lought. The composition letters ough have totally eight different pronounciations.
No,I don't think spelling is the same as pronunciation.i.e.1.foreign.(silent for G)
2.knowledge.(silent for D)
3.Houre (silent for H)
