答：这个问题有深度.一般人只记它是一个the more...,the more...(越.就越.）句型,从不bother 去分析其句子成分.
是的,逗号不能连接两个简单句,分号可以,当然连词可以.
一如：The first time I saw her,I fell in love with her.这句子一样.我们看不到连词,只看到两个句子,用了逗号连接.这怎么可以呢?
语法学家的任务是：将它纳入语法系统中去.说the first time,the moment,the minute ,这些名词词组,加上directly,immediately 这两个原本的副词,都可以当连词来用,相当于：when...for the first time (第一个）,及as soon as .,(后四个）,引导时间状语从句!
同理,the more...,the more .,句型,有越.,就越.的意思.认为第一个句子是从句,相当于一个条件状语从句：if.more ...,那么,就可以将the more (形容词或副词的比较级）当成连词：
=If you are better friends,you'll more probably have disagreements.
越好的朋友,更可能会争论
--》如果你们是较好的朋友,你们就更有可能会意见不一致.（争论）
这个问题还可以再深入一些：the more...,the more...句型中的the是定冠词吗?冠词后面不是应该跟名词的吗?

记得张道真的语法书上曾经说过,现查《Longman》：

你看,词典上也只讲到了the是副词!并没有提到连词!
