In my opinion, the most challenging change that Chinese people have to make in order to successful in Europe is to alter their attitude to,or perspective in,two vital aspects:rules and interpersonal relations in hierarchies.
Rules
Every society has its rules, both written and unwritten. Moreover, every society has an idea about the right balance between being unnecessarily rigid in keeping to the rules (similar to when we are 10),and ignoring the rules altogether. This balance is a fine line that is not explicit and often we ourselves do not understand exactly how we draw this line.
In any case,Western society has more respect for the literal meaning of rules, while traditionally Chinese rules are drafted, and used,as guidelines up to interpretation and the context (China being a so-called high-context culture).Where the interpretation comes from is easy:in China there are usually people to personally supervise that people stick to the rules, hence all the traffic controllers, ethical committees at Chinese companies and so forth. In my experience,Chinese people working in a Western environment first often ignore or bend the rules, and seek out shortcuts,in a way that is inacceptable to Western standards. Many of my clients had such problems, for instance, with the usage of safety equipment.
In an attempt to change this and adapt to the working culture,Chinese people often go through a phase when they are unnecessarily rigid and uncreative in applying the rules, until finally they understand the dynamics of how Western people think. When they arrive at this point,a Western observer will often make the comment that a Mr.Wang in question “is Chinese but really doesn’t think like a Chinese”.
Such individuals will have the advantage of being able to skip back and forth between the two operational cultures, and explain discrepancies that neither Westerners nor Chinese people see very clearly.Having bee in China for about 8 years,I think I am turning into such an individual myself.
Relations
A very similar behavioural change can be observed in terms of interacting with people in a hierarchical structure. It is interesting (and often amusing) to see how the Western members of mixed management teams try to break down the power distance while Chinese members try to maintain it.In the Western mind, too high of a power distance is a sign of distrust and is bad for efficiency. In the Chinese mind, the high power distance with the boss is a guarantee that the employees are protected and understand their place in the organization.
Crocodile Park is located in Xiamen Jimei Lam Soon Dragon Pool, with more than 20 countries, more than 2,000 crocodiles, the largest crocodile up to 6 meters and weighing 1.5 tons, the smaller is only 30 centimeters,is the most complete crocodile products, interior Crocodile Park, the largest exhibition area.
