Deep in the forest there lived a lovely little fir-tree.He lived at a good place,there was plenty of fresh air and sunlight and some much larger companions lived around him,both fir-trees and pine-trees.
Yet,nothing had more importance for the little fir-tree than growing up.He didn’t notice the warm sun nor the fresh air,he didn’t care about the farmer’s children who passed by chatting,having come out to pick strawberries and raspberries.
Very often they came with a full pot of strawberries or had threaded them to a straw; then they sat down next to the little fir-tree and said:” how tiny and peculiar he is!”
That,the little fir-tree couldn’t stand at all.
After a year he had grown a good section,and the next year he added another one – you can judge on the age of fir-trees by the number of sections.
“oh,why can’t I be a large tree such as the others?” the little fir-tree sighed.“so,I would be able to spread my branches wide apart and watch the world with my crown!The birds would build nests between my branches and when the wind blows I would nod as gracious as the others over there.”
He didn’t enjoy the sunshine at all nor the birds and the red clouds sailing across his head from morning to evening.
During winters time when white glistening snow covered the earth,it happened quite often that a rabbit came running close and simply jumped over the little fir-tree!Oh,how unpleasant and provoking this was!
