在我看来,句子比较纠结,我觉得coupled with the desire of businessmen to maximize profits and the desire of individuals to maximize their incoms那一坨是非谓语做后置定语,修饰demand of individual consumers,然后that 后面是定语从句修饰coupled……那一坨的.
可能一眼看过去好像是强调句,但我觉得其实不是,强调句的结构是it is+强调部分+that+句子其余部分,看that后面的句子缺的成分前面那一坨只好在原句中做主语,则先还原句子,Thus,in the American economic system,the demand of individual consumers ,coupled with the desire of businessmen to maximize profits and the desire of individuals to maximize their incoms together determine what shall be produced and how resources are used to produce it .
这样可以看到,that 后面的东西并不是修饰主语的,而是修饰主语后面的后置定语的,所以不应该是强调句.
