I was born in the year 1632 in the city of York,of a good family.My father had become very wealthy as a merchant and married my mother whose family name was Robinson.My father's name was Kreutznauer,but we always call ourselves Crusoe.So my name become Robinson Crusoe.
My father gave me a good education and wanted me to become a lawyer.My heart was set on going to sea,and noting that my parents or mind.One morning my father called me to his room and talked to me very seriously about my future.He told me that if I stayed at home I would have all that I could want.He warned me of the dangers of the life at sea and asked me not to think of leaving home any more.For a short time I followed his advice,but after a few weeks the desire for adventure returned.I decided that one day I would run away from home.
About one year later I was in the seaport of Hull.One of my friends was going to London in one of his friend's ships.He persuaded me to go with him,saying that it would cost me nothing for the voyage.This time I did not even tell my parents that I waas going,but on the first of September in the year 1651 went on board the ship,which was going to London.
No sooner were we out of the harbour than the wind began to blow strongly and the waves to rise.As I had never been to sea before,I began to feel ill and frightened.I decided that,if I ever got safely on land again,I would go straight home and never go to sea again.
After two days the sea was calm and the wind had dropped.I slept well during the night,and in the morning felt much better and happier.My friend came to see me and put hia hand upon my shoulder.
‘Well,Bob,how are you?'he asked.‘You must have been afraid the other night when we had that bit of a wind.'
‘A storm?'answered my friend.‘Do you call that a storm?Why,it was nothing at all.Give us a good ship and a clear sea and we think nothing of a bit of wind like that.You will soon forget about it.Look what lovely weather we have now.'
We had been at sea for six days when we came to Yarmouth.The wind was coming from the wrong direction,so we were forced to put down the anchor and wait outside the harbour.After we had waited for four or five days the wind again become stronger,but the captain saw no danger.On our eight day at Yarmouth the sea was so high that several waves came over the side of the ship.The captain ordered another anchor to be let down so that we would not be swept away.Everybody was now beginning to be afraid.
In the evening the waves become higher than ever and came over the side of the ship every two or there minutes.First of all the crew had to use their axes to cut away the foremast of the ship.Then the mainmast became so loose and was shaking the ship so much that it had to be cut away also.
