This unusual design is shown here sa a mirror frame,but a similar frame could just as easily be used to frame aphotograph or favourite picture.Only two colours are used,although the grouting is a third element.
1.Cut a sheet of plywood measuring 50x70cm(20x80in)with a jingsaw(saber saw).uaing a large brush,prime the wood by coating it all over with diluted PVA(white)glue.leave it to dry for 24 hours.
2.Place two blue tiles face down on a dishtowel and fold over the edges.Using a hammer,smash the tiles repeatedly,checking from time to time until they are roughly broken into manageable fragments,keeping the blue and black pieces in separate piles.
3.Draw around the plywood sheet on a large sheet of tracing paper,then draw an inner rectangle of 39x60cm(16x24in).Sketch one scroll design on the tracing paper,then use sheets of carbon papar to transfer your design onto the plywood,flipping the tracing paper to repeat a mirror image another five times.Go over with a thick pen.
4.Mix some tile adhesive with admix,then spread it 3mm(1/8in)thick over a small section of one of the scrolls,removing any excess.Working from the scroll edge out,fill in the blue tiles,and repeat until the frame is covered.Allow 24 hours for the adhesive to dry.
5.Spread some tile grout over the mosaic with a rubber spreader,using a circular motion.Continue until the grout fills all the gaps and is level with the tesserae.Sponge away any surface grout with a damp sponge.Allow to dry for 1 hour,then polish with a dry,soft cloth to rub off any residual grout.Glue the mirror in place.
