The plastic injection molding is a complex and highly efficient process to produce a large variety of thermoplastic products.The product quality is determined principally by the mold design.Within many design parameters,the number of gates and their locations have great effect on the product quality.It is necessary to optimize the number of gates and their locations to improve the quality of injection-molded products.Several studies reported have investigated the optimization of the injection molding process.Pandelidis I and Zhou Q[1] presented the optimization of gate location using the combined scheme of a simulated annealing and a hill-climbing method.The quality of a gating design was presented as an additive function of a temperature differential term,an overpacking term and frictional overheating term,with appropriate weighting term.Young W B[2] developed a method of gate location optimization based on the minimization of the mold filling pressure,uneven filling pattern,and temperature difference during the mold filling process.The genetic algorithm was used to search the optimal gate location.Irani R K et al.[3] developed a system that perform the gate design in two stages:global search followed by a local search.The limitation of this system is that the features used are of very simple geometry.
