MENTOR PROGRAM
[4 160] Overview of the Mentor Program
A program that commenced on 1 July 1998 links unemployed people with volunteer mentors from the business and wider community who will help them in their search for work.
The Mentor Program is targeted to 1,000 job seekers who:
·are aged between 18 and 24(include)
·have been in receipt of Newstart Allowance for 26 weeks;and
·are subject to the mutual obligation requirements.
Involvement with a mentor does not in itself satisfy the young person's mutual obligation requirement.However,young people can take part in a mentoring arrangement in conjunction withe their mutual obligation activity.
The mentor acts as a support to the young person while he or she is participating in job search and/or other approved activities.The role of the mentor will vary depending on the needs of the job seeker,but could include:
·job search and networking advice;
·information about the work environment and maintaining employment;
·help with other activities(such as study or volunteering) and how to capitalise on these to help find work;
·help of a more personal nature on issues that may be affecting the young person's ability to find and keep work;and
·providing a role model of effective workforce participation .
Centrelink identifies young job seekers who are eligible and interested in volunteering for the mentor Program and refers these job seekers to a local mentor provider who will match them with a mentor.
Chapter 5 discusses the factors affecting social security entitlements,and income and assets tests and gifting rules are also reviewed.Examples are used to apply some of the concepts.Chapter 5 also includes a discussion on the social security treatment of business structures.
