1.Mary and lucy are both great kids,but mary is the more beautiful girl.这里如果去掉the 变成but mary is more beautiful girl你一定会感到别扭.你的问题在这里同理,the在这里起到特制的作用,指出比较的二者,这里but mary is a more beautiful girl也说得通,但是一定不能没有冠词,冠词在这里表特指
