布封（Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon）少年时期就爱好自然科学,特别是数学.1728年大学法律本科毕业后,又学了两年医学.
1730年,结识一位年轻的英国公爵,一起游历了法国南方、瑞士和意大利.在这位公爵的家庭教师、德国学者辛克曼的影响下,刻苦研究博物学.
1733年,进法国科学院任助理研究员,曾发表过有关森林学的报告,还翻译了英国学者的植物学论著和牛顿的《微积分术》.1739年,当上了副研究员,并被任命为皇家御花园和御书房总管,直到逝世.布封任总管后,除了扩建御花园外,还建立了“法国御花园及博物研究室通讯员”的组织,吸引了国内外许多著名专家、学者和旅行家,收集了大量的动、植、矿物样品和标本.……

His works influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire naturelle during his lifetime; with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death.[1] It has been said that "Truly, Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century".[2] Buffon held the position of intendant (director) at the Jardin du Roi, now called the Jardin des Plantes; it is the French equivalent of Kew Gardens.
