It was a cold evening, and Eduardo received a large envelope. In it was his dream. But he was too nervous to open it.
He put the envelope into his bag and caught the bus.
Eduardo arrived at home with the envelope.
He walked past his classmates and sat down in his place. He took a deep breath, drew the envelope out of his pocket and
opened it carefully. As he read the words, “Congratulations … you have been accepted.” he was already in tears.
Eduardo’s mother had died, and he lived with his father.
His father was badly hurt in an accident and was unable to work.
During the years just with his father, Eduardo was much more than a student.
He was also a child worker in a factory. After working every day, "when his tired friends were drinking coffee or sleeping,
Eduardo went to the evening school." He studied very hard there.省略

Joan worked in a children’s hospital as a nurse. One evening there was a big dance at the hospital. Most of the doctors and nurses would be there, but of course somebody had to be left to look after the sick children, and Joan was not of the lucky ones. She liked dancing very much, so when she had to start work that evening while her friends were getting ready to go to the dance, she felt very sorry for herself.
She went to each sick child one after another and said good-night, until she came to one little boy, Dick. Dick was only eleven years old, but he had a very serious illness and couldn’t move most parts of his body except his hands. Joan knew Dick would never get any better, but "the little boy was always happy and always thinking about other people instead of himself".省略
想问一下引号里面的两句话为什么要用进行时态呢?很不解,用一般时态不行么?这里改用一般时态会给人一个什么感觉? 可以解释一下它们的区别让我拨开云雾见青天吗? 十分感谢

第二篇中加了ing,用过去进行时表示状态的一直持续,比如说thingking就说明小男孩一直在替别人思考
直接加ed则只是表明过去的一种动作,暂时性的
文中Dick不可能就替别人考虑了一次吧?
第一篇中则表示过去进行时,男孩上夜校的时间,他的朋友们正在喝咖啡睡觉
这两处就是过去进行时的2个用法,一个表单纯的过去进行时,一个则是过去进行时表是状态的持续~明白了吗?
