独立主格结构,是独立的.
一般语义上相当于一个分句.语法上类似于伴随状语.
we didn't find Smith (attending the leccture)
个人理解成:分词短语做宾补
No one had told him about there being a lecture the following day.
可分成两句:
there was a lecture the following day.
No one had told him about it
这两句合成一句,第一句改成分词结构.
about 后面,there be结构 就要做介词宾语,于是改成分词.
