20 The Death of an Old Dog
NuBi,our smooth-haired dog,lived for nearly fifteen years.During the last six months of his life,he found it hard to go upstairs.He had to stop from often to catch his breath.
A little after twelve o’clock one hot July night he came upstairs.He was as lively as ever.He went to my husbands’s side.Then he went to my boy’s room.
I got up.I felt uneasy about NuBi.I looked in the room and saw him touch the boy’s face.He hurried to my sister’s room,then he went quickly downstairs.
I was puzzled（迷惑） and uneasy(不安的) for some time.At least I made up my mind to find him.NuBi was at the foot of the stairs.He lay in his old spot（地点,场所）.His forepaws（前爪） were crossed（交叉）.His head tested sideways.He was dead.
