CT discovers the mutti-talent of non-ionic low osmolar contrast media:Non-invasive angiography and the visualization of perfusion,permeability and interstitial space.Non-ionic contrast media are the current end point of a development which begun about SO years ago with the first intravenous urographic agents.As the name says,these were iodinated contrast media aimed at visualizing the urinary tract following intravenous injection.In addition to urography they were used from the beginning to visualize open and closed body cavities including blood vesseLs because they mixed with aqueous contents of the cavities,were usually well tolerated and completely excreted within short time.Later on it was realized that compounds belonging to the class of urographic CM did not enter ceils or pass biological barriers which in practice means that they are not enterally absorbed nor accumulate in any organs or tissues other than the kidney to a diagnostically useful extent.Because of this property,urographic CM were also called extracellular CM.Before the introduction of modern CT,urographic CM were named nonspecific CM expressing the frustration of their users about the fact that they did not display structures or tissues distant from the site of
