Ed Stafford,a man from the UK,has just completed a 4,000-mile hike along the entire Amazon River. It took him more than two years to complete this journey.
Starting in April 2008,Stafford finished his trek in August 2010.He is the only person in the world that has trekked the river from its source to the sea.
This is an amazing achievement in many ways. The trek started in the Andes (some rough climbing through them) and included a lot of hiking through rocky areas, thick under brush and swamps1.No one knew how many illnesses he had to fight against and how many dangerous animals like snakes he might meet.
Stafford’s goal was to make people pay more attention to rainforest destruction2.He hoped that more and more people would protect the rainforest.
Some people said that there weren’t any great adventures left and that Ed Stafford was not young enough to face those challenges. But he has shown the public that there’s always something new to see and do in the wild.
